Feedback: Of the Positive and non-Positive varieties

I woke up the other day, and stumbled over to my office. Waiting in my inbox was: some Feedback!

First, I received a gushing response from a friend I haven’t heard from in a while. He predicted I will be sitting on a shiny mountain of gold coins thanks to this program. He also made a feature request: a Diary mode that I will describe in a later post.

And also, the ever-useful “suggestions for improvement”:   the current input mode (click on target, type amount done, Enter/Tab to enter) is a little slow if you want to jot down your targets for several days back. I’ll have to work on a quick mouse-only alternative input.

Amongst other generally positive comments from friends, I received some very honest and direct criticism from my very honest and direct girlfriend. It seems that my old design, with the graphs as the focal point, was much more encouraging than the new design.

Basically, she said:

this = Good!

(1) this = Good!

this = not so Good!

(2) this = not so Good!

I’ve given this some serious thought. It seems that there are two things competing for attention, and both are important parts of my program. First, there is the “interaction” side: you need to be able to see, at a glance, what your targets are for today and possibly the next few days. I believe that (2) accomplishes this very well.

But, there is also the “information” side: you also want to see your overall progress. This is the main focus of (1), but is relegated to a tiny inset window in (2).

I’ve come up with a better layout. It is a nice blend between these two.
Now to get it working…
