“Evil Eye” Worries Some Visitors
It has come to my attention that some visitors with Internet Explorer receive scary looking warnings, or an evil looking eye icon in their status bar.
Even worse, some people have received a message about “There are both secure and nonsecure items in this page” when clicking on the Buy Now buttons.
Judging by my traffic records, and common sense, I am quite sure I’ve lost several sales due to this!
Basically what was happening was that the browsers were looking for a “privacy policy” file on my site, so that it could determine what information was being collected.
Since I don’t collect any info at all besides anonymous traffic data, and since all transactions are handled by PayPal, I did not include a privacy policy.
Mistake…
Ah well, live and learn.
I’ll be adding a P3P privacy policy, so this doesn’t happen anymore.
I hope this hasn’t stopped too many of you!
[Edit: It turns out it was all due to images. The "Buy Now" PayPal GIF was linked from PayPal. Once in PayPal, the header logo image was linked from my site. This mixing of sources confused the browser as to what privacy policy was in effect, mine or PayPal's.]
